Is carbon fibre a solution to oil crisis?

Is there any solution to oil crisis? If yes, then what it is. The answer is yes-Carbon Fiber. The next question which arises is that what is carbon fiber and how will it solve the oil crisis problem? There are major factor which are responsible for the rising oil prices. The biggest factor is demand, which is never going to come down. So the only way to control this oil crisis is to look for a solution. And the answer for this is Carbon fiber.

The best way to reduce the oil consumption and thereby increasing the efficiency is to use light weight material. Carbon fiber is a material, having good strength and is light in weight when compared to material which is presently used in automobile industry (two times stronger and two third less in weight than steel).

Carbon fibers are thin strands of carbon which can be bound together and then molded to any shape. Replacing this with the current steel can reduce the weight of the automobile by nearly 60%, this in turn  reduces the fuel consumption by 30%. This is quite a good in fuel saving. The other benefit of using this carbon fiber is that it reduces the emissions by 10% to 20%.

This is what wikipedia has to say about carbon fibers:

Carbon fiber (alternately called graphite fiber or graphite fiber) is a material consisting of extremely thin fibers about 0.0002–0.0004 inches (0.005–0.010 mm) in diameter and composed mostly of carbon atoms. The carbon atoms are bonded together in microscopic crystals that are more or less aligned parallel to the long axis of the fiber. The crystal alignment makes the fiber incredibly strong for its size.

Nice idea except for a couple of issues. Carbon fibre is essentially synthetic graphite made from oil or coal pitch. So while your reducing the weight of cars and hence their consumption of oil, you’re increasinng the consumption of oil (or worse coal) to make these carbon fibres. In short, a zero sum game.

Far better to develop innovative ways of producing biofuel and electrically driven vehicles. And I’m not talking about cutting down corn to make biofuels. There’s a sea change coming in both biofuels and EV’s and someday oil will be a quaint, faint memory. Along with all of the egregious CEO’s that ran the oil companies. Can’t happen soon enough.

I do agree with you but partially. Carbon fiber is made from oil or coal pitch, but its a one time usage or investment in producing it. We don’t use oil again and again as we use in generating power for which oil is consumed indefinitely. It will be a good idea to use these carbon fiber built automobiles along with biofuel or electrically driven vehicles. After all our aim is produce eco friendly vehicles along with increased efficiency.
